It was a whole different show when we converged on WBFO for the weekly Buffalo Rising Roundtable with guest Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls. Mark Scott was our gracious host, and Robby had a lot to say about Buffalo, the Buffalo music scene and his return as a resident of Buffalo.
Music is Art happens this Saturday at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, after getting its start at Takac's Allentown studio several years ago. In our podcast, Takac tells the story of a festival that timed itself to be part of the Allentown Art Festival, and then took off from there. Though it was always a hit, MIA at the Knox is a natural--not just because music is, in fact, art--but because the wide open venue allows everyone to see the music as well as hear it.
Leave it to forward-thinking Louis Grachos, who has long maintained his goal to integrate all types of art (with a heavy emphasis on community), to invite the festival into the Knox's magnificent setting. It's going to be 12 hours of non-stop talent and fun on three different stages, along with art displays, dance performances, DJs and an auction. Of course, there'll be food and drink too.
About Takac...I'd never met him before, but for several years now, about every other person I came across would work, "I'm friends with Robby Goo," into the conversation at some point. (Eye roll.) I'm not sure I buy into the whole Kevin Bacon six-degrees of separation thing, but I should have know that in this small town it could very well be true. Takac is one of the most affable and down-to-earth people you'll ever want to meet, and we're glad he sold his home in Los Angeles to be back here, working and bringing in a cast of nationally known artists to his studio. He's a true ambassador of Buffalo.
See you at the Knox on Saturday.
*Dance exhibitions are set to include multiple dance schools, centers and studios. The Music is Art Student Battle of the Bands winners will play on the main stage, and this year the other finalists and winner of The Big Easy in Buffalo battle will also perform. There will also be artistian foods available from Steel Crazy Café as Crepes and Knishes and the 2008 Taste of Buffalo New York Award Winner Arancine (rice balls) coming from Filippo's Ristorante Italiano. Steel Crazy café' is operated by the TV show Hell's Kitchen celebrity chef, Shayna Rachilson-Zadok.
