Young reviewer VICTORIA WATSON was at the Carling Academy last night. But did she go all goo goo over the Goo Goo Dolls?
IF YOU have ever seen City of Angels starring Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage, you will have heard the Goo Goo Dolls’ most famous piece of work, Iris.
It was also covered by Ronan Keating a couple of years ago, but hearing this song live in the Carling Academy last night brought tears to my eyes.
The crowd nearly lifted the roof off the building singing along to New York-born Johnny Rzeznik’s husky vocals.
However, this band are not a one-trick pony.
Former lead singer, and founding member, Robby Takac took over vocals for some of the older, heavier material like Slave Girl.
It is hard to believe this group has been going for more than 20 years, but it really took the release of Iris in 1997 for them to become superstars.
Their song Better Days – another stonking tune – was adopted by CNN as an anthem for the recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, demonstrating the ever-increasing mainstream acceptance of the band.
Last night, though, they showed they avoid the complacency shown by bigger groups (naming no names) and worked for every cent! Johnny appeared to enjoy the fact that the crowd knew every lyric and he was really in tune with the audience.
It was fun to see a band not obsessed with image or appearance but concerned only with the matter of rocking out and making the evening fun for everyone, including themselves.
The range of music from these guys was immense.
There was everything from heavy metal to ballads, but still with that killer guitar.
We were even treated to a preview of a new song.
Written a couple of weeks ago, the response was encouraging – another amazing track from these understated rock gods.
