In an industry where two consecutive hits earns you the mantle of legends, The Goo Goo Dolls' 22 years in the business surely hands them the status of rock gods.
But it could all have been so different for the band originally formed by John Rzeznik and Robby Takac in Buffalo, New York. They could easily have missed out on fame when they were refused a gig by a promoter on the grounds that their original name of The Sex Maggots was unsuitable.
Even when their mainstream break came in the form of an invite to contribute to the film City Of Angels, Reznik was suffering from writer's block and only threw together the song Iris in a few minutes, only to see it become their biggest hit.
That single made The Goo Goo Dolls the go-to-guys for AOR ballads, alienating fans of their harder material but making them a hit machine from 1995 onwards, with songs such as Name, Slide, Big Machine and Stay With You.
Ten million worldwide sales followed, and they've stayed in the public eye of late thanks to the exposure provided by the release of their recent greatest hits collection and Before It's Too Late, the single that featured in Michael Bay's Transformers blockbuster.
These summer gigs see The Goo Goo Dolls taking a break from recording their ninth studio album back in their Buffalo hometown.
